Ski & Snowboard

Love your skis today, they'll love you back on the slopes!

F.A.Q.

WAXING

WHEN

Matted bases (discolored/whitish), skis/snowboards that are not very fast and fluid in their movements, or a feeling of excessive friction are typical symptoms of an over-dried base.

HOW

A mix of hot paraffin waxes (carefully selected to suit the type of snow) is deposited on the skies base and the excess is then removed. Waxing is part of standard maintenance since a dried base can compromise not only the skiing but also the integrity of the base itself.

PRO-TIP

A thick layer of hot wax at the end of the season also prevents rusting of the edges when the skis are not being used.

EDGE SHARPENING

WHEN

Although less frequent than waxing, periodic maintenance of edges is essential due to their progressive deterioration. Sharp edges are required to guide the ski properly and to have optimal grip during turns.

HOW

Resharpening the profile of the edge requires the removal of the phenolic base above it, rectification of the lateral edge angle (90°-86°) and the tuning angle (1°-0.5°), removal of the burr, and eventual beveling of the top and bottom of the ski.

PRO-TIP

Sharpening can be done either by machine or by hand according to your choice or need.

BINDING MOUNTING

WHEN

It can be easily guessed that the proper mount and adjustment of bindings are essential points for safe skiing. It is essential when we have new bindings or we want to check the ones already mounted.

HOW

Bindings are mounted with special masks to ensure proper centering in both longitudinal and lateral directions. DIN adjustment of the tip and heel, and thus the release force of the binding, is determined by multiple factors such as: gender, age, height, weight, and the experience of the skier. Improper calibration can result in the unintentional loss of the ski with ordinary stresses or, in the worst case, failure to release gear when falling.

PRO-TIP

It is wrong to adjust bindings using your own body weight! This can lead to potentially dangerous situations.

BASE WORKS

WHEN

The ski base is the polyethylene surface underneath the ski. When the slab gets damaged in the long run (scratches, etches), it is necessary to repair it in order to have a safe, fast, high-performing ski.

HOW

The repair is done by extruding new polyethylene at 360° C and removing the excess with the help of a grinding stone. The advantage of the stone is the capability of imprinting micro-scratches that form a pattern called "strucutre" of the ski base: this base structure prevent the ski from "sticking" to the snow. Different types of strucutre are used to adapt the ski to various types of snow.

PRO-TIP

At our place, the grinding is done with a ground stone to do the coarse grinding and the finishing touch (as in the factory). This is the only system that provides a quality structure. Beware of the use of cheaper and more common belt grinding: the base will results "silky" and the ski slower!

FULL TUNE

WHEN

It is a set of repairs that restores the ski to factory condition. Useful when multiple repairs of several parts of the ski/board are needed.

HOW

This includes:

  • Structured stone ground base
  • Base edge sharpen and bevel
  • Side edge sharpen and bevel
  • De-tune tips and tails and de-burr
  • Hand polish edges
  • Hot wax and buff

PRO-TIP

No pro-tips here! The ski will look and perform brand new again!

SPECIAL REPAIRS

WHEN

These are special maintenance services that are only required if the core structure of the ski is considerably compromised (breakage or loss of part of the edge, damage to the base or to the internal structure of the ski, loss of adhesion between the layers that form the main structure of the ski).

HOW

Major damage to the base or edges is fixed by creating a plug or replacing a section of the edge and leaving the ski under a hot press for few hours. Specific gluing agents are also used. Unfortunately, this repair is not always possible, but we would be glad to evaluate together the feasibility of the work and what needs to be done in order to restore your equipment.

PRO-TIP

When the base has cuts deep enough to expose the inner core of the ski, immediate action must be taken. If the damage is not fixed, water and snow will begin to rot the ski from the inside, making it, at some point, dangerous to use and no longer repairable.
